Frequently Asked Questions
As I've stated in the past, some of these would be more accurately described as "Frequently Sent Rants" but FSR just doesn't roll off the tongue.
Do you have a question that isn't listed here? Perhaps you just want to tell me off. Please drop me a line. I am genuinely interested in hearing from you.
Questions about www.foreverdave.com
| Why can't I leave your site with the "Back" button? |
I dislike frames. I dislike it when I click on a link on a framed site, and a full site opens inside the frameset. Of course, I can't prevent framed sites from linking to me (hell, I'll take all the links I can get) but I can prevent my site from being displayed in such an unflattering manner. As you'll notice on each page if you view the source, there's a little bit of JavaScript that breaks me out of frames. Unfortunately, the result is that, unless you hit the "Back" button really fast, from the first page you came in on, you'll end up on the same page framed into a frameset, which will then force itself out of the frames and back onto the full page. Most browsers now provide a simple history on the back button that can help you around this. |
| So... Who's your hosting provider? |
I use Dathorn Internet Services for my hosting. At less than $14 a month, I get a reasonable amount of storage and transfer quota, that I get to split however I prefer amongst as many domains as I wish. Given that I seem to collect domains the way I collect old PC hardware in the garage, this is a good thing. (Hey! If you decide they're really cool, and want to switch over to them, use this link to do it, and I get, like, a few bucks or something!)
All of my domains are registered through GoDaddy. As long as you play it smart and dodge all the exciting added services offered ad nauseum, it's cheap, effective and reliable. |
| Dave! Why have you stooped to the commercial links? |
Assuming you mean my links to buy.com , I've had lots of really good experiences with them, both in terms of customer service, and price. So, I figured that if I was going to be mentioning products they offer anyway, I might as well point the reader to a soure that I felt good about.
Of course, I'm not opposed to making a few bucks off of the process, either. New! They're all long dead now, and I'm too lazy to remove either them, or this. |
Questions (and Rants) about my opinions on parental spanking
| Dave, you twit! You've misused "negative reinforcement." |
Yup. But you knew what it meant, didn't you? (P.S. Good luck with your Psych degree) |
| What are your qualifications to be making such radical statements? |
Not much really. My career since leaving college has been exclusively focused on software quality assurance. My only qualification is an intense interest in behavioral psychology, as well as Neurolinguistic Programming. I am also the father of two little girls, Allie and Katie. |
| I'm working on a pro-spanking speech/paper. Do you have any studies or references I can use? |
Short answer: Nope
Long answer: Studies supporting spanking don't exist primarily because the necessity to defend spanking is a fairly new occurrence. Unfortunately, as the emotional anti-spanking rhetoric becomes more ingrained in our culture, studies supporting it won't be allowed because "it's abuse!"
That said, I wasn't kidding when I suggested Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers as a valuable resource. Chapter eight really does contain an excellenct and very persuasive treatise on the validity of spanking. |
| I'm working on a spanking-related speech/paper. Can I quote you? |
Absolutely. Warning, legalese ahead! I retain copyright to the contents of all web pages in the http://www.foreverdave.com/ heirarchy. However, permission is granted for any non-commercial use in whole or part, so long as I am credited as the source. In all likelyhood, permission for commercial use will be granted, just drop me a line. End legalese. That said, if you do use anything from my pages, I would certainly appreciate it if you drop me a note and tell me what you used and how it worked out. |
I'm working on a spanking-related speech/paper. Can you write up a bio that I can plagiarize reference? |
I was born in 1967. My parents moved frequently during my early childhood, but slowed down around second grade. I attended public schools until sixth grade, when I attended a private Christian school through ninth grade. I started college the following year at Gonzaga University, then completed my BS in Computer Science at Eastern Washington University, with about nine months off to work for my uncle about 300 miles away.
I met my wife in 1993, and we were married in 1995. We have two daughters, born in 1996 and 2000. I am currently employed as a software quality assurance engineer, and my wife is a homemaker. |
| I'm the parent of a teenager, and I've suddenly realized s/he's out of control. What's the best way to spank my child? |
OK, go back and read the page. See the part where I say that needing to spank an older child may be indicative of deeper problems? I'm talking about you. You've been what my Mom has reservedly called "a flake" as a parent. Don't blame Mom, she's had to deal with a lot of you as a Guardian ad Litem. At this point there's no "right punishment" that's going to solve the problem, your whole family needs counseling. Now. |
| Have you stopped beating your children? |
So I don't get questions exactly like that. But a large number of correspondents assume that, because I am a vocal advocate of the right of parents to choose corporal punishment, I practice it myself. In fact, I have never spanked my girls, and hope that I will never have to exercise that option. |
